This 2 Day Adirondack Digital Weekend Photography Workshop is suitable for beginner to intermediate photographers who would like to learn more about the entire digital photographic process from inspiration to creating the final print. The course schedule features instruction on many facets of digital photography including – camera basics, digital camera features and menus, RAW files, histograms, lenses, depth of field, composition, lighting, various photography techniques, and the full digital workflow, plus learning some introductory color layer and masking Photoshop skills. The weekend features several hours of classroom instruction spread out over the 2 days, with plenty of time for general Q & A, as well as individual attention. Participants can work with camera principles and techniques as well as practice basic Photoshop techniques on the image files they shot during the workshop.
During the photo shoots there will potentially be considerable diversity in the lighting conditions. We will be working with whatever the lighting is that day to decide both when, where and the types of scenes we’ll be photographing. We may be doing close-up or telephoto photography, as well as photographing wide angle or panoramic landscape views. Carl will adjust the classroom schedule as needed to take best advantage of various lighting conditions for the photography shoots.
This photo workshop is rated ‘easy’. Most of the potential photography locations are within a short walking distance. There may be some ups and downs to the walking, so it is a good idea to have a pack that comfortably accommodates both camera gear and outdoor gear while walking in these conditions. Please see the materials list below for suggestions of things to bring.
There are a maximumof 10 students in the workshop to facilitate the general instruction and allow the instructor to provide individual attention. No matter which type of camera you use, a sturdy tripod is essential for working with composition and slow shutter speed techniques.
HDR Magic - Nature Photography Workshop with Carl Heilman II
High Dynamic Range Photography and Photoshop Techniques
Saturday, August 18, 9am-5pm
Fee: $165/$150 members
With photography, what you see is often NOT what you get! The eye sees it, but the camera can't capture it in one shot - or 'sees' it differently than you do. HDR techniques provide ways to create images that contain the full range of light and detail you saw. While digital capture keeps evolving and improving, it's still not possible to capture both highlight and shadow detail at once in high contrast lighting situations. This one day workshop covers HDR exposure and digital capture issues as well as HDR post processing techniques.Every one of the images on this page required HDR techniques for both shooting and processing. Details that we see easily in the highlights and shadows are not always captured by the camera. The class will cover the thought process and techniques used in shooting for HDR, as well as post processing techniques to help achieve a natural looking effect in the image. The day will include classroom time and at least one photo shoot. Bring along whatever camera equipment and lenses you are most comfortable with. While the this class will be mostly landscapes based, the HDR techniqus can be applied to a wide variety of photography situations.
This advanced photography workshop is designed for those who are already comfortable with camera basics such as the relationship between aperture, shutter, and ISO settings. During the first half of this 8 hour day, we will start out with an hour or two introduction / presentation, and discussion - and then will play with HDR shooting techniques in the field.
The second half of the day will be spent in the classroom, working on the images we shot, learning HDR and digital imaging enhancement techniques using Adobe Photoshop.
Equipment requirements include - a DSLR or point and shoot camera with bracketing capability, sturdy tripod, and remote release, as well as a laptop with a recent version of Photoshop installed and updated. (available as a 30 day trial download from adobe.com)
