Canoe Paddle Making
Saturday, July 7, 8:30am-5pm
Instructor:  Caleb Davis
Fee:  $155/$130 members

Instructor, Caleb Davis, of Long Lake and New Hampshire, is returning to the Arts Center/Old Forge to offer his popular canoe paddle making workshop.  The class is limited to 6 students. Last summer’s workshop filled up quickly and an additional workshop was scheduled.  Caleb will supply prepared one-piece cherry paddle blanks, work tables, and the necessary tools for students to complete their own paddle.  All work will be done with hand tools.  The paddles are of the traditional shape which is usually longer and narrower in the blade shape.  This decreases the amount of squaring effort the canoeist must put into an efficient stroke.  This also reduces the effort and soreness for the canoeist. Cruising speed is not affected because the surface area of the blade, although narrower, is longer.  The blades are easier to steer and the exit and entry are both smoother than with a wide blade.  The instructor will give a brief history; describe the different shapes, sizes, and the advantages and disadvantages of each style.  Students will leave with a completed paddle that only needs the final sanding and coating.  Students are asked to bring their own lunch and snack.
