Overview

We unconsciously consume typography every day without thinking about the letterforms themselves. Yet, the way they are displayed and perceived frames our daily experience.

Because we don't expect type in art, when we see it, we give it our full attention. Even when the letterforms are abstracted, often the initial (unconscious) impulse is to restructure the elements into digestible text, to "decode" the abstract and resolve its meaning.

This exhibition explores the impact of incorporating text and letterforms in art. Although these works represent diverse art practices, all use typography to support a visual idea or compositional aim.

Art+Type is organized around three thematic threads:

  • Gesture - an echo of movement, the mark left by the physical act of writing
  • Form - letterforms as abstraction, independent of meaning
  • Meaning - typography in concert with imagery as a means to provoke thought

An Opening Reception will be held on May 23, from 5 - 7 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
