Flowers, Trees and Roots: The Wild World of Plants

Botanical art, technically speaking, emphasizes accurate, scientifically correct
illustrations of live plants or herbarium specimens to record what the plant looks like for
a scientific purpose. Botanical art can also emphasize the aesthetic characteristics of
living plants in gardens or their natural habitats and therefore be more impressionistic
renderings of what plants look like and the emotions they elicit from their viewers. This
exhibit aims to explore all manner of rendering plants: their habitats; their shape, form,
color and uses; their meanings in culture, i.e. the “language of flowers;” their symbolism
in mythology and religion; their medicinal and hallucinogenic properties; and imaginative
renderings inspired by literature and poetry or music.

Join us for our opening reception on December 9th from 5-7pm. The reception is FREE and open to the public and light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. The opening is the first opportunity to see Flowers, Trees, and Roots: The Wild World of Plants; Botanical Illustrations: The Art & Science of Plants; and Adirondack Plant Photo Contest.
