Introduction to Landscape Oil Painting
View all Classes & WorkshopsOverview
Greg will introduce the student on how paint a landscape scene quickly in one setting. This is referred to as “alla prima” or “wet on wet” oil painting. Think of Bob Ross and the Impressionists! We will touch on some basics of composition, blocking in a scene, materials, and how to utilize a limited palette of colors to simplify the painting process.
Greg has spent most of his life out West chasing beautiful scenes and tinkering with beakers full of dangerous potions. He is now located in the Adirondack Mountains, a land rich with mysterious landscapes and teaming with wildlife. By exploring the boundaries between abstraction and the natural world, Greg strives to provoke a deep emotion to draw the viewer in. His work will be featured in the Eco Gallery, running alongside CADK.
He is the winner of 3 first place awards at the Central Adirondack Art Show and 2 first place awards at the Annual Plein Air Paint Out at View Arts. He has held over a dozen solo exhibits and is currently represented by 4 galleries throughout Upstate New York.
Materials that we will be using (Materials provided or bring your own if you prefer ):
Latex or Nitrile Gloves, clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, and an apron
Sketchpad or notebook for sketches and notes.
Small Gessoed Panel or Canvas: 8x10” or 9X12”.
Brushes and palette knives.
Odorless Mineral Spirits such as Gamsol by Gamblin.
Oil Paints: a white with primaries (a yellow, blue, and red). I suggest Titanium white, Cadmium Yellow medium, Cadmium Red medium, and Ultramarine Blue for warm colors. Hansa Yellow and Hansa Red make create alternatives and are less toxic than the Cadmiums. For colder colors, I like Permanent Rose and Prussian Blue but feel free to bring other colors that you love!
